ARMED FORCES HOSPITALS FACING SERIOUS PROBLEMS HANDLING UNPAID DEBTS
- An interesting look at how servicemembers overseas have to deal with healthcare bills from the 26 hospitals worldwide that are run by the U.S. Navy. In particular, the U.S. Naval Hospital in Yokosuka in Japan has 20,000 unpaid bills as of two years ago, and is now sending those bills out to families. The Navy’s hospitals are now using a pilot program operated by the Treasury Department, called Centralized Receivables Service, which acts as a collection agency for departments of the federal government. An Inspector General’s report on the issue of unpaid medical debts revealed $73 million in overdue bills at one Army hospital alone.
HOW NEBRASKA CAN “CURE” ITS LAWSUIT PROBLEM
- The state of Nebraska should take steps like increasing the filing fee for lawsuits and expanding the amount of property that is exempt from seizure and garnishment to slow down aggressive debt collectors, the Cornhusker state’s largest newspaper proposes in an editorial. The editorial is a response to an article that was published last week that detailed how Nebraskans are being subjected to more lawsuits than residents of other states.
