BILL INTRODUCED IN HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TO CAP WAGE GARNISHMENTS
- Reps. Elijah Cummings [D-Md.] and Jeff Merkley [R-Ore.] have introduced legislation that would cap the amount that debt collectors could garnish from the wages of individuals with unpaid debts. The full text of the bill is not yet available online, but a published report says the bill’s objective is to protect consumers from losing their homes and cars to predatory debt collectors.
LAW FIRM SETTLES SUIT FROM PA. AG
- A Pennsylvania law firm has settled a case with the state’s Attorney General after it was accused of using a Colonial-era law to force individuals to repay the debts of of deceased family members. The law firm, Hamilton Law Group, and its president, James Havassy, were subsequently sued by the Pennsylvania AG for mis-using the state’s Filial Responsibility Law. Under the terms of the settlement, the law firm will pay more than $6,000 in fines and court costs, and remove any negative items from individuals’ credit reports.
ILLINOIS OWES FBI $3 MILLION FOR FINGERPRINT PROCESSING
- Among $7 billion in unpaid debts from the government of Illinois, which is operating without an approved budget, is $3 million owed to the Federal Bureau of Investigation for processing fingerprints and conducting background checks. The FBI is considering turning the unpaid bill over to the Treasury Department for collections, according to a published report.
