POKER PRO NAMED IN DEBT COLLECTION FRAUD CASE ALLEGES RACISM
- A former professional poker player, who is being prosecuted by Preet Bharara, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, is alleging his case is motivated by racism and, if he were white, he would be facing civil — not criminal — charges. Travel Thomas was one of 11 accused of taking more than $30 million from individuals using coercive and deceptive debt collection tactics. Thomas’s lawyers argued that the only two owners of debt collection offices prosecuted by Bharara’s office are black.
WELLS FARGO RECEIVES INITIAL APPROVAL FOR $30 MILLION TCPA SETTLEMENT
- Wells Fargo has received initial approval from a federal court judge for its $30 million settlement with individuals alleging violations of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. While it sounds like a lot of money — and it is — it actually covers nearly 7 million class members, who would be eligible to receive less than $5 each. According to the settlement orders, the plaintiff received calls on her mobile phone made by an autodialer that she did not consent to receiving. At the same time, Wells will pay more than $4 million in penalties after being accused by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau of charging illegal fees and failing to update inaccurate credit information on student loan borrowers.
CFPB NAMES EIGHT NEW CONSUMER ADVISORY BOARD MEMBERS
- The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has named eight new members to its Consumer Advisory Board. The board serves to advise the bureau and Director Richard Cordray and meets regularly. Most of the eight members named to three-year terms are consumer advocates or represent the consumer protection side of the industry.

- Northern California and Madison, Wisconsin do not seem to have a lot in common on face value, but individuals in those areas are the most financially responsible in the country, according to data released last week by NerdWallet. NerdWallet looked at credit scores, delinquency rates and debt levels to determine which cities had the most fiscally responsible residents.
