UTAH ATTORNEY BLASTS STATE FOR LACK OF CONSUMER PROTECTIONS
- A consumer attorney in Utah has come out against the state, saying there are not enough consumer protections against debt collectors. In response, the lawyer has begun filing class-action lawsuits against collection agencies — three in the last 45 days. There is no state entity responsible for investigating debt collection agencies, according to the lawyer and any complaints are instead referred to the Federal Trade Commission. The article recaps how a bill was passed during the 2013 legislative session that was recommended to be used in other states.
SACRAMENTO COUNTY SITTING ON $500 MILLION IT CAN NOT COLLECT
- Sacramento County, California is looking at almost $500 million it can not collect because those who owe it do not have the means to repay their debts, according to a published report. In the meantime, the county’s Department of Revenue Recovery is going back and forth with the county’s grand jury over how successful it has been in recovering unpaid debts. The DRR says it is recovering 48% while the grand jury claims the number is actually 6%.
