FOUR AGENCIES PICKED BY IRS TO RECEIVE UNPAID TAX ACCOUNTS
- The Internal Revenue Service has selected four collection agencies that it will use to outsource the collection of unpaid tax debts owed to the federal government. CBE Group, Conserve, Performant, and Pioneer Credit will receive accounts from the IRS as part of the program. The IRS was required to restart the controversial program as part of a federal law that went into effect last year. The companies will start receiving the accounts next Spring. The IRS will be required to notify those taxpayers whose accounts are being sent to private agencies.
AGENCIES RECEIVING IRS CONTRACTS ANNOUNCE HIRING SPREES
- Two of the companies — ConServe and Pioneer — are expected to hire as many as 300 employees each now that they are part of the new program. Sen. Charles Schumer [D-N.Y.] sent out a press release promoting the new jobs that the contracts will create for his state.
TITLE LENDER FINED $9 MILLION BY CFPB; MADE VISITS TO BORROWERS’ HOMES AND WORKPLACES
- The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has announced a $9 million fine for TitleMax, an auto title lender, for, among other things, making “intrusive” visits to the homes and workplaces of individuals who did not repay their loans. The company was also charged with making loans that had interest rates and tried to convince individuals to make smaller payments to extend the term of the loan.
COMPANY ANNOUNCES TEXT-MESSAGING PRODUCT AND PROMOTES TCPA COMPLIANCE
- A company called Texting Base has released a new product that aims to allow companies to send text messages and comply with the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. The company boasts that it is using artificial intelligence to help its clients make sure they are in compliance with the TCPA.
MORE THAN 9 MILLION CONSUMERS COULD NOT HANDLE RISE IN INTEREST RATES: TRANSUNION
- While 92 million individuals would see their monthly debt payments rise if the Federal Reserve Board raises interest rates, only 10% of those would not be able to handle the increase, according to data released by TransUnion. The average monthly debt payment would increase $6.45, according to the report.
