The rhetoric against Richard Cordray, the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, is heating up.
On Friday, the House Financial Services Committee outlined its case that Cordray can be held in contempt of Congress, for not answering several subpoenas that were issued related to the CFPB’s proposed arbitration rule.
Cordray allegedly failed to hand over documents that were requested by the Committee, according to a published report. The report notes that Congress has not initiated any legal action against Cordray, despit its claim that it has the necessary evidence to do so.
Meanwhile, in Ohio, a secretive group known as Protect America’s Consumers has launched a website against Cordray, who has been rumored to be mulling a run for governor of the Buckeye State.

A communications director at the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics said that being director of the CFPB both helps and hurts Cordray. While likely to help him attract endorsements from luminaries like former president Barack Obama, if Cordray leaves office before his term expires to run for governor, “he’ll have to explain why.”
