RHETORIC AGAINST CORDRAY HEATS UP IN WASHINGTON AND OHIO
- The rhetoric against Richard Cordray, the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, is heating up in both Washington, D.C., and in Ohio, where Cordray is being rumored as a potential candidate to run for governor next year. The House Financial Services Committee says it has a case against Cordray for contempt of Congress and a secretive political action group has launched a website aimed at Cordray should he decide to run for governor.
DEBT COLLECTION RING IN CHINA ACCUSED OF USING GRANDMOTHERS, HIV PATIENTS AS INTIMIDATORS
- A dozen women in China — some of them as old as 70 — have been sentenced to up to 11 years in prison for using “violence and abuse” to coerce individuals into repaying their debts. The middle-aged women were hired because people don’t like to fight with women, one of the group said. In one case, a gang of women surrounded a man’s house for six days to get him to move out and make way for a new property development. When he came out of his house, one of the woman grabbed his genitals while insulting him. If I may impersonate Cliff Claven for a minute, I don’t recall anything in the FDCPA that explicitly says you can’t do that.
CREDIT CARD DEBT SURPASSES PRE-2008 RECESSION LEVELS
- The amount of credit card debt in the United States is back above the pre-2008 recession levels, according to data from the Federal Reserve. There was nearly $1.03 trillion in unpaid credit card debt in June. The total amount of consumer debt increased $12 billion from May to June, which was less than what economists had been expecting.
