LAWN CARE COMPANY GETS IT OWN GRASS CUT BY MASS. AG
- A New England lawn care company has reached a $300,000 settlement with the attorney general of Massachusetts after the company was accused of engaging in illegal debt collection activities on its own and through a third-party agency. Contracts signed by individuals with the company included hidden fees that were not disclosed which caused individuals to pay money they didn’t owe. The company then subsequently filed lawsuits against individuals who did not make the payments on those fees.

- Is the architect of a bill in Congress looking to pad his own wallet by suggesting amendments to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act? Rep. Dave Trott has sponsored a bill that would essentially exempt lawyers from being subjected to the FDCPA. Trott Law, PC, is one of Michigan’s largest foreclosure law firms. Rep. Trott sold his stake in the firm when he was elected to Congress three years ago and denies any connection. Critics of the proposed legislation say it would remove safeguards against “legal mills,” which are law firms that churn out thousands of court cases every year.
