An attorney who specializes in collections and judgments has been anxiously awaiting the release of O.J. Simpson from prison so he can continue to try and collect on what was a $33 million civil penalty against the former football player after he was sued by the families of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson who were murdered in 1994. Simpson was acquitted of their murder, but was sued separately.
With interest and penalties, the amount owed by Simpson to the Goldman family is now north of $70 million. And while it’s unlikely that anything close to that amount will ever be collected, attorney David Cook is looking forward to trying. Cook is the attorney who has represented the Goldman family for a decade and he’s ready for what he calls round two of his quest.
The problem for Cook is that Simpson’s pension is protected from seizure and he does not have many other assets left. Simpson was released from a Nevada prison yesterday after serving nine years following an armed robbery conviction.
Simpson said during his parole hearing that he was planning to move to Florida, but the Florida attorney general said that Simpson is not welcome in the state.
The Goldman continue to try and collect on the unpaid debts not for the money, but the principle, Cook told CNN.
