CFPB TO STAY OPEN DURING SHUTDOWN
- The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is not part of the federal government shutdown, and will continue to operate for the foreseeable future. Because the CFPB is funded through the Federal Reserve Board and is not part of the Congressional appropriations process, it is not at risk of being closed during the current shutdown. Ironically, the CFPB’s funding process is something that Congressional Republicans have been trying to change for several years. Republicans want the CFPB’s budget to come under Congress’s control, so that they might have more power over the CFPB.
OHIO COLLECTION AGENCY OPENS 500-SEAT CALL CENTER
- Credit Adjustments, Inc., a collection agency based in Defiance, Ohio, will open a new 500-seat call center today in Toledo, according to a published report. The company plans on hiring 17 employees initially and will fill the remaining seats during the next three years.
CFPB DROPS SUIT AGAINST PAYDAY LENDER
- The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has made an “earth-shattering” change in deciding to drop a lawsuit against a payday lending company that was accused of deceiving customers, according to a law professor and former employee at the agency. The CFPB submitted a motion to dismiss the lawsuit on Thursday against Scott Tucker, who was sentenced to 17 years in prison earlier this month on separate charges of collecting unlawful debts and falsely stating that businesses were owned and operated by Native American tribes.
OKLAHOMA COUNTY LOOKING FOR NEW COLLECTION AGENCY
- Cleveland County, Okla., is looking for a new collection agency to help it recover $9.3 million in unpaid court costs, spread across 9,000 bench warrants. The county clerk is looking to switch agencies because the collection rates at the current agency have declined for two consecutive years.
