Taking a more lighthearted approach to the serious problem of growing credit card debt, LendEDU polled 1,000 individuals and had them play a game of “would you rather” where one of the primary options was disclosing the amount of credit card debt across all of the individual’s social media accounts.
In most cases, the individuals surveyed chose to have their credit card debt posted online.
Even though the approach was lighthearted, LendEDU’s motives were educational. Noting that one reason why individuals often carry a lot of credit card debt is an apprehensiveness to checking their balance because of what they might see, LendEDU wanted to show that there are a lot of things that are worse than having a lot of credit card debt.
For example, when asked “Would you rather have your credit card debt balance posted on social media for all to see or have nude photos of yourself posted on social media for all to see?,” only 16% opted to have nude photos of themselves posted online.
When asked about having their salary posted online or their credit card debt, it was nearly 50/50.
LendEDU also asked individuals if they were more embarrassed by their credit card debt balance or what they are purchasing on your credit cards. Just over 20% were more embarrassed about what hey are purchasing while 80% were embarrassed by their balance.
