A lawyer and a group of law students from Brigham Young University have unveiled a website to help individuals who are being sued by debt collectors for unpaid debts.
The site, called SoloSuit, is an automated tool to help individuals respond to websites to avoid having a default judgment entered against them.

Using SoloSuit, a response to a lawsuit can be created in 10 minutes, said Kimball Dean Parker, the lawyer leading the project.
One large problem that still has to be overcome, especially in Utah, is that the responses have to be printed out and mailed to the courts. In Utah, lawyers can electronically file complaints and documents, but individuals who are representing themselves do not have access to the technology. Parker noted that many individuals who are sued do not have access to a printer to print the response. They are working on a solution for that as well.
“This system in incredibly hostile towards debtors, I’m embarrassed,” Parker said in a published report. “I’m embarrassed our state has these laws in place.”
