Will Turner once ran 62 miles on a treadmill. Aside from the obvious question — why — it’s an accomplishment that should be at the top of anything that mentions Turner, who is back for his second stint at TEC Services Group. A lot wiser and still an advocate of everything that technology has to offer, Turner keeps trying to find opportunities and overcome challenges for his clients. Read on to learn more about Will, which TV channel his golden retrievers prefer, and how his ex-wife’s sister got him into the business.
Name: Will Turner
Job Title: Senior Sales Executive
Company: TEC Services Group, Inc.
Length of time at current company: rejoined in January 2024 (7.5 years total)
Length of time in industry: 25 years
How did you get your start in the industry?
My ex-wife’s sister was on the management team at First Data (now Fiserv) and opened a door for me to interview for an inside sales position selling FastData, a skip tracing and identity authentication tools, into emerging markets (non-traditional lenders, super-regional banks, debt buyers and collection agencies).
What is your career highlight so far?
Helping start TEC Analytical Services in 2010, a new division for TEC Services Group. We created a SaaS based middleware solution that uses performance data, analytics and A/B testing to take the guesswork out selecting the best third-party data and scoring products and the optimal order they should be used to achieve higher performance outcomes.
When or how are you most productive?
In the morning in a clutter-free environment without distractions and after a good night’s sleep.
Which industry professional do you admire most?
My late father. Before he died at 52 of Leukemia, he sold his railroad equipment manufacturing company and exchanged a stressful and demanding job for what, for him was a simpler and less stressful career as a real estate agent.
What is one thing you do better than everyone else?
I wouldn’t claim to be the best at anything, but I have a genuine intellectual curiosity about people and things that motivates me to understand some things more deeply. When possible, this deeper understanding helps me identify opportunities and overcome challenges for my clients.
What do you like most about this industry?
The ability to use data, analytics and technology to solve ever changing business challenges.
What is one thing you wish you could change about this industry?
Accelerate the speed in which the industry adopts technology.
If you weren’t in this industry, what would you be doing?
I’d be a professor or an attorney.
Describe a typical work day.
All days start the same. Alarm goes off at 6am. Feed the dogs, turn on Dog TV for our two golden retrievers, and cook a hot breakfast. At my work computer between 7am and 8am, plan my day, followed by a mix of outreach, sales follow up items, networking and prospect calls.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Freshly baked artisanal breads.
What is the best advice you have ever received?
If you don’t have something nice to say don’t say it all.
What are you currently reading?
“Deep Work… Rules for focused success in a distracted world.” By Cal Newport
What is one fact you’d like everyone in the industry to know about you?
The longest distance I’ve run on a treadmill is 100 km (62.13 miles).
Who else would you like to see answer these questions?
Roger Weiss, President CACi.
