Court Denies Motion to Dismiss in FCRA Case Over Disputed Credit Reporting
- A District Court judge in Kentucky has denied a defendant’s motions to dismiss and for summary judgment in a Fair Credit Reporting Act case over the accuracy of information that was furnished to the credit reporting agencies. The case stems from allegations that inaccurate information was reported as past due and included in a bankruptcy filing, even though the account was neither past due nor involved in the bankruptcy.

GAO Investigating CFPB’s Recent Actions Amid Staff Reductions
- The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has confirmed it will investigate recent actions taken by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau under the direction of Acting Director Russell Vought. The inquiry comes after Democratic senators, including Elizabeth Warren [D-Mass.] and Andy Kim [D-N.J.], requested the GAO examine the impact of significant workforce reductions and other moves that could undermine the CFPB’s ability to enforce consumer protection laws.

House Republicans Propose Major Funding Cuts to CFPB
- House Republicans are advancing a proposal to significantly reduce the funding of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Under the proposal, the agency’s annual funding would be slashed by 70%, from its current cap of $823 million to just $249 million, according to a published report. This dramatic cut could undermine the CFPB’s ability to effectively oversee financial services companies and protect consumers from predatory practices. The proposed measure is set for a markup hearing before the House Financial Services Committee today.
