Households are increasingly waiting until the last possible moment to pay their bills, with many relying on urgent or same-day payments to keep up. According to the 2025 ACI Speedpay Pulse Report, 31% of consumers made an urgent or same-day payment in the past year, a trend especially pronounced among Gen Z and Millennials. At the same time, rising living costs and financial stress are forcing consumers to prioritize essentials like food and gas over rent, mortgages, and utilities. That means billers are seeing more last-minute transactions—often digital and mobile-driven—as consumers play a balancing act with their cash.
By the numbers:
- 3 in 10 consumers made an urgent or same-day payment in the last 12 months.
- Nearly 4 in 10 Millennials (41%) and 38% of Gen Z say they’d pay a fee for faster processing, compared to only 7% of Boomers.
- 89.2% of consumers still prefer a live person over AI for resolving billing issues, even as digital and self-service channels dominate.
- Almost half of smartphone users now use a mobile wallet to pay bills, making them mainstream across generations.
- 20% of consumers report being victims of identity theft; in two out of five cases, new accounts were fraudulently opened in their name.
Driving the news: Rising financial stress is reshaping how Americans pay bills:
- A SecureSave survey found that 97% of workers report financial stress, with nearly half skipping a basic necessity in the past six months.
- A Pew Research study shows one in five Americans struggled to pay rent, mortgages, or transportation costs in the past year.
- Doxo reports U.S. households spend an average of $2,058 per month on essential bills, or about 31% of median household income.
Why it matters: Consumers’ demand for speed, simplicity, and flexibility is now shaping the future of bill pay. For billers and financial institutions, that means:
- Urgency is the new norm — last-minute payments are less about poor discipline and more about cash flow survival.
- Digital-first isn’t optional — billers’ websites, apps, and mobile wallets are the channels consumers expect.
- AI must be used strategically — helpful in fraud prevention and routine self-service, but consumers still want humans for problem resolution.
What they’re saying: “In a digital-first world, speed, simplicity and self-service are no longer competitive advantages—they are competitive imperatives,” said Ron Shultz, General Manager of ACI Speedpay. “Customer loyalty today is built in moments where payments are instant, seamless and frictionless, grounded in trust and customer centricity.”
