New Truecaller Feature Lets Family Members Intervene in Suspected Scam Calls

A widely used caller identity platform has introduced a new feature that could further change how consumers interact with incoming phone calls, according to a published report.

Truecaller recently announced a new “family group” capability that allows one person to act as an administrator for a small group of users and monitor alerts about potential fraud calls received by other members. The feature also allows the administrator to remotely end a call if they believe the recipient may be at risk of being scammed.

For professionals in the credit and collection industry who rely heavily on phone contact with consumers, the rollout reflects another shift in the ongoing battle for consumer attention and trust on the phone.

The platform, which reports having more than 450 million users worldwide, initially tested the feature in a handful of countries including Sweden, Chile, Malaysia, and Kenya. After what the company described as promising results, the tool is now being rolled out globally and is available even to users who are not on a paid plan.

The new functionality allows a tech savvy family member or friend to become the administrator of a group with up to five members. Once a group is created, the administrator receives alerts when the platform identifies a potentially fraudulent call targeting a member of the group.

If the administrator believes the call could be harmful, they can remotely end the call for members using Android devices. The monitoring feature works for both Android and iOS users, although the ability to terminate calls currently works only on Android.

The company says the feature is designed to protect vulnerable users such as elderly family members who may be more susceptible to scam calls.

“I think, unfortunately, all of us know somebody or another in our families or friends who have been impacted by fraud,” said a company executive when discussing the launch of the feature in the report. The executive described the new functionality as a shift toward helping users protect people in their personal networks from phone scams.

The system also allows administrators to block certain numbers or international calling codes for all members of the group. Administrators can share a block list across the group as well. The company said administrators cannot view personal call histories or SMS messages, which is intended to address privacy concerns.

Additional monitoring tools are available for Android users who choose to enable them. Those tools can allow the administrator to see certain phone conditions such as battery level, whether the device is in silent mode, or whether the user is walking or driving.

The feature arrives at a time when scam calls remain a massive global problem. The company reported identifying more than 7.7 billion fraud calls last year in one major market alone.

For organizations attempting to reach consumers by phone, developments like these highlight how aggressively technology companies are working to filter and intervene in phone communications. As more tools are introduced to screen calls, block numbers, or even terminate calls automatically, legitimate outbound callers may face additional challenges convincing consumers to answer the phone.

The company is also exploring new artificial intelligence tools that could screen calls and automatically disconnect them if certain scam related language is detected.

If widely adopted, those capabilities could represent another step toward a future where technology sits between callers and consumers, deciding which conversations are allowed to happen at all. For organizations that depend on phone engagement, that future may already be arriving.
