Judge Rules Belief That Bill Is Unfair Does Not Make Reporting Inaccurate
- She cancelled her lines two months in, lost the “free” phones and watches, and got billed $5,326 at full price. Her theory: the carrier promised the best network and didn’t deliver, so she owed nothing and the charge-off was inaccurate. A federal judge in North Carolina disagreed, tossed the FCRA and negligence claims as bordering on frivolous, and sent the contract dispute back to small claims court where it started.

IRS Finalizes Rules for $10,000 Car Loan Interest Deduction
- Auto lenders asked for safe harbors because they don’t collect VINs, final assembly locations, or personal-use data. Treasury said no. The final rules for the new car loan interest deduction take effect Nov. 9 and bring a new Form 1098-VLI reporting requirement for anyone receiving $600 or more in qualifying interest, with no phase-in and no extension of last year’s transition relief. FTC Orders Nuvei to Pay $4.85M, Overhaul Merchant Screening
- The FTC says the payment processor kept accounts open for merchants it knew or should have known were fraudulent, including an offshore tech support operation that moved $30 million through its rails. Beyond the payment, the stipulated order spells out an unusually detailed screening and chargeback monitoring regime, and the “Covered Clients” list that triggers enhanced review includes debt relief services and outbound telemarketers.
