NEW GARNISHMENT LAW IN GEORGIA GOES INTO EFFECT TODAY
- Eight months after a federal judge declared a previous law unconstitutional, a new law is scheduled to go into effect in Georgia today that allows for garnishments of bank accounts to help recover unpaid debts. One debt collector said the new law is “not so bad,” pointing to a shorter timeframe to rule when a consumer claims a garnishment was made improperly, among other changes.
LIBRARIES DEBATE EFFICACY OF FINES AND WHETHER TO DO AWAY WITH THEM ALTOGETHER
- As more library systems look to bolster their collection efforts to help recover unpaid fines and make up for revenue shortfalls, a larger debate is taking place across the country about whether the fines should be levied in the first place. Used as a deterrent to keep people from borrowing books and other materials and not returning them, the fines have instead led to many people being shut out from their libraries. In Oakland, Calif., for example 20% of the population is barred from taking out materials from the library because of unpaid fines.
CITIES WITH LARGEST STUDENT LOAN DEBT BURDENS
- College Park, Georgia, has the highest ratio of student loan debt, compared to the city’s median income, according to a study conducted by WalletHub. The average amount of student loan debt in College Park is $42,507, which is 168% higher than the town’s median income of $25,329. Bastrop, La.; Selma, Ala.; East St. Louis, Ill.; and Natchez, Miss., all had ratios where the amount of student loan debt is at least 150% higher than the median income in those areas.
