SQUARE TWO FILES FOR BANKRUPTCY
- Square Two Financial Corp. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection yesterday, announcing an agreement to sell its portfolio of assets to Resurgent Holdings for an investment of $405 million. The proceeds from the agreement will result in a final purchase price of $264 million for 100% of the reorganized company. Square Two will close its U.S. operations on close of the deal, while Resurgent will keep the company’s Canadian operations running.
HOUSE COMMITTEE HOLDING HEARING ON CFPB STRUCTURE
- The House Financial Services Committee has announced it will hold a hearing tomorrow, “The Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection’s Unconstitutional Design.” Witnesses include Theodore Olson, the former Solicitor General of the U.S., a law professor, and two representatives from D.C. think tanks.
MORE POWER LEADS STATE TO TAKE BACK COLLECTIONS FROM PRIVATE AGENCY
- The state of Arizona has more power than a collection agency does, which is why it has taken back 180,000 cases of unpaid traffic fines to a state-run agency instead of placing them with a private company. The state can refuse microsoftproductssettlement to allow drivers to renew their licenses of vehicle registrations in the event of unpaid fines, a penalty that no private collection agency can offer. The influx of individuals attempting to resolve their debts has been so significant that the state has had to hire more staff to handle the workload.
