CFPB LEADERSHIP BATTLE CREATES PLENTY OF NEWS ON DAY ONE
- Yesterday was Day One of dueling directors at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Mick Mulvaney, President Trump’s appointee, brought donuts to work on his first day and then imposed a 30-day freeze on hiring and regulatory activities, including civil penalties. He also had harsh words for Leandra English, who was appointed deputy director of the CFPB on Friday and has sued President Trump to assert her claim that she is the rightful leader of the agency. Mulvaney vowed not to “decimate” the CFPB, but did said the agency would be “dramatically different” under his leadership. A judge, meanwhile, decided not to issue a temporary restraining order that would block Mulvaney from attempting to run the CFPB. Finally, former director Richard Cordray went on TV last night and argued in favor of English leading the CFPB.
